Bio - Deidre Chavez Greenly

As a multimedia artist, Deidre examines concepts of destruction and renewal through sculpting and painting. The combination of her B.F.A. in Fine Arts and B.S. in Electrical Engineering complement her artistic interests exercising her creative and critical thinking skills. Her designs integrate abstraction with realism in content and aesthetics.

Her practice is motivated by her experience as a human who cares deeply for humankind, as an engineer who seeks structure, and as an artist who uses creativity as expression and response to a chaotic world. Connection between humanity and nature can be found in all aspects of her artwork.

She sculpts rocks from the future, titled Future Findings designed by her imagination and vary in composition. Each unique rock is built from core to exterior with synthetic materials such as plastics, electronics, rubber, tar rubble, and other non-biodegradable products destined to reside on Earth indefinitely. Her future rocks offer a glimpse into a future epoch beyond the Anthropocene by drawing on the relationship between stratigraphy and human impact. Earth’s natural processes create unexpected and whimsical configurations within the strata and will very likely continue to do so as time continues. From a scientific standpoint, replicating the magic of nature’s process is a hefty endeavor considering time and mighty forces. However, conceptually it lends itself to exercising artistic freedom and focus allowing Deidre to follow her own aesthetic interests in this journey to the unknown.

Deidre uses various mediums and techniques when painting with acrylic, oil, or encaustic. Her use of vibrant colors and extensive layering reflect time and rediscovery in the formation of a renewed nature. Themes that include future fossils, petroglyphs, rock faces, skies, and conceptual ponderings can be found throughout the series of her paintings.

She is a cultural blend born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico which she cherishes as her original home and frequents to spend time with family. Growing up in Santa Fe, regularly attending local art markets and being surrounded by local artisans gave her a deep appreciation for textiles, vibrant colors, and nature. She embraced Colorado Springs for her career where she currently resides and works in her art studio. She has a fondness for found objects and repurposing items which assist her in maintaining a sustainable practice.

The creative spirit flowed from an early age alongside her mom extending the functionality of appreciated items and making new ones. Since things did not come easily to the family, embellishment and restoration were skills of necessity and helped exercise resourcefulness. Deidre’s pragmatic approach to life led her into the engineering profession which fostered her desire to find innovative solutions. Pursuing a fine arts degree granted her the opportunity to nurture her artistic interests and satisfy her desire to physically “see” a scene ensconced within her mind’s eye.

Deidre’s inherent need to problem solve and long standing question regarding nature’s adaptation to discarded human-made products have been the catalyst for her art practice. She considers it an honor to work in her studio daily and contemplate a beautiful, art-filled future.
